World Science Day for Peace and Development that was proclaimed by the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001 (UNESCO 31 C/Resolution 20), and since then it is celebrated every year on the 10th of November.

World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of recent developments and research in science, by linking science more closely with society. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable. Knowledge sharing between the scientist and society enables us to find solutions and make appropriate decisions to address economic, social, and environmental challenges and to achieve sustainable development. In 2020, the global COVID-19 pandemic further demonstrated the critical role of science in addressing global challenges.

Therefore it is symbolic that on World Science Day Academia joined hands with the Government to fight climate disasters. National Environment Agency (NEA) and Ilia State University (IIiaUni) signed a memorandum of understanding, to stress the critical importance of education and science in addressing global challenges like climate change and pandemic with support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and Scientific Network for Caucasus Mountain Regions (its secretariat Sustainable Caucasus) within the framework of the project “Strengthening the Climate Adaptation Capacities in Georgia”.

Ilia State University, which has been actively involved in the establishment of the Scientific Network for the Caucasus Mountain Region since 2013, has a long history of cooperation with the Network and its secretariat Sustainable Caucasus. The Scientific Network for the Caucasus Mountain Region and its secretariat was actively involved in the facilitation of the aforementioned MoU. We will continue our support to develop the model of involvement of universities and scientific institutions in adapting to climate change in the future and overall strengthen the cooperation with decision-makers and further introduce this model in other higher education institutions in both Georgia and entire the Caucasus region, with the financial support of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
