On 18-19 February 2016 scientists from the Caucasus met at the workshop “Towards a Regional Research Agenda” in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The workshop was organized under Work Package 2 (Scientific Excellence) of the SNSF-SDC SCOPES project “Sustainable Caucasus”. The main goal of the workshop was to discuss the recent evolution of knowledge in fields related to the study of mountainous areas in the Caucasus. The workshop organizers presented an analysis of scientific publications, based on a survey carried out among researchers working in Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, Turkey, and Iran.

Scientific publications included in the analysis were grouped according to  geographical coverage, thematic focus, type of publication, and language. The data shows that the number of publications has increased in recent years, particularly since 2012.

This process of identifying and analyzing data and research contributions is the first step of a process leading to the elaboration of a regional research agenda.
