The First Regional Initiative Group Meeting

On the 28th of June 2021, an important first gathering of the Regional Initiative Group (RIG) has taken place. RIG is formed based on national alliances in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia (National Initiative Groups — NIGs) comprised of scientific, civil, and private organisations interested and working in the fields of Disaster Risk Management (DRM), Sustainable Mountain Development (SMD), and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA).

Beginning of the Cooperation between the Science of the Carpathians Network (S4C) and the Scientific Network for the Caucasus Mountain Region (SNC-mt)

On the 25th of February Scientific Steering Group of the Scientific Network for Caucasus Mountain Region and colleagues from the Science for the Carpathians met to discuss the joint plans in light of the signing of MoU for the following years. The Science for the Carpathians Network (S4C) and the Scientific Network for the Caucasus Mountain Region (SNC-mt) constitute networks of researchers working on mountainous regions with similar aims. The research agendas of both S4C and SCN-mt contain many similar focus areas aimed at understanding the socio-ecological systems of the respective mountain regions and their transitions. Both networks are supported by and cooperate with the UNEP Office in Vienna, Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention, which works on international mountain ecosystems. The aforementioned organizations are partners and have invested time and resources in the promotion of both networks

The Scientific Steering Group of the Scientific Network for Caucasus Mountain Regions gathered to discuss the upcoming third Caucasus Mountain Forum. The meeting was attended by the representatives of the Scientific Steering Group members from the six countries (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey) as well as by the colleagues from the GiZ Caucasus Biodiversity Program willing to cooperate under the CMF3 and Carolina Adler, the Executive Director of the Mountain Research Initiative and Co-chair of Scientific Committee of the third Caucasus Mountain Forum.

A New Partnership Initiative to Support Distance Learning Module (DLM) Implementation in Armenia

On January 21, 2021, at the office of GeoRisk Scientific Research Company was held a meeting with the participation of scientists and practitioners, particularly representatives of the Institute of Geological Sciences NAS, Armenian State Pedagogical University, and Crisis Management State Academy MES, freelance expert and country representative of the Caucasus Network for Sustainable Development of Mountain Regions (Sustainable Caucasus). The meeting aimed at the introduction and implementation of the Distance Learning Module (DLM) for DRR and Disaster Risk Mapping in Armenian Higher Education Institutions.

Third National Initiative Group Meeting in Georgia

On December 25th, 2020, the third online Meeting of the National Initiative Group of Georgia (NIG Georgia) took place. The meeting's primary purpose was to agree on cooperation mechanisms and joint systemic actions to strengthen collaboration between the academics and practitioners to eliminate existing problems for sustainable development of mountainous regions, including effective management of natural disasters and climate change adaptation.

World Science Day - Academia joined hands with the Government to fight climate disasters

10th of November is World Science Day for Peace and Development, therefore it is symbolic that on World Science Day Academia joined hands with the Government to fight climate disasters. National Environment Agency (NEA) and Ilia State University (IIiaUni) signed a memorandum of understanding, to stress the critical importance of education and science in addressing global challenges like climate change and pandemic with support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and Scientific Network for Caucasus Mountain Regions (its secretariat Sustainable Caucasus) within the framework of the project "Strengthening the Climate Adaptation Capacities in Georgia".

Second National Initiative Group Meeting in Armenia

On September 16, 2020, the second meeting of the National Initiative Group of Armenia (NIG Armenia) took place online bringing together the scientists and practitioners interested in planning, development, and strengthening national as well as regional dialogue.

Second National Initiative Group Meeting in Azerbaijan

On August 21, 2020, the second meeting of National Initiative Group of Azerbaijan (NIG Azerbaijan) on development and planning of regional dialogue and cooperation took place online, bringing together the scientists and practitioners. The meeting was held in three sessions.

Proposed Package of Changes NDC, NIG Georgia

In the framework of the second meeting of the Georgian National Initiative Group the renewed Georgian National Determined Contributions (NDC) document was reviewed and as a result of this meeting with the involvement of group members was developed a package of changes (in English and Georgian) and proposed to the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, Department of Climate Change for review. The document is signed by the majority of NIG Georgia members.

Meeting at the Crisis Management State Academy of Armenia

On May 8, 2020 a meeting of the experts of the project “Strengthening Climate Adaptation Capacities in the South Caucasus (SCAC)” implemented by the Sustainable Caucasus and supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the working group of the Crisis Management State Academy (CMSA) took place at the CMSA.

First Regional Workshop on Teaching-Learning Practice Improvement

On March 30 -1 April 2020 the First Regional Workshop on Teaching-Learning Practice Improvement took place in terms of the project Strengthening the Climate Adaptation Capacities in the South Caucasus: Enhancing regional cooperative action for the benefit of the Caucasus mountain region (SCAC) with financial support from the Swiss Co-operation Office-South Caucasus funded by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Due to outbreak of coronavirus pandemic around the world and restricted travel conditions the meeting was organized through ZOOM videoconference.
